anatomae-archive-deactivated201:
hello!! don’t be sorry, i’ve never got an ask like this before, and probably for good reason - i honestly don’t know. however the lovely ash asteriads and maddie mythaelogy have come to my rescue:
- the goldfinch by donna tart
- black chalk by christopher j yates
- dangerous girls by abigail haas
i’m going to go ahead and rec
- dare me by megan abbott, which is… not very similar, but has that ‘vibe’ i got while reading tsh, that sort of vaguely repulsed and dark vibe and i couldn’t stop reading it, finished it as soon as i could.
- the novel that ash asteriads is going to write about fairytales (tbc, watch this space, etc)
to conclude, courtesy of maddie mythaelogy:
“The thing about the secret history, Richard, is there are no books quite like it.” - Henry Winter in a patronising tone, probably"
EDIT BY DARSHANA MAYNADS:
- the likeness by tana french
pro-tip: read the girl of fire and thorns by rae carson
- the main protag is a brown, overweight WOC that is not defined by any of those things
- there’s religion, spirituality, adventure, fantasy, and appreciation for coconut scones
- the romance is prime, but not center-stage
- there is a central, realistic depiction of eventual friendship and respect between two characters of the opposite sex
- elisa’s character arc is an honest-to-god tour de force that will make you weep with appreciation (lots of finding your own self-worth, not giving so much credit to ~fate~ and ~destiny~)
- pre-modern fantasy that’s not based around Western history
- it’s a completed series, which means you don’t even have to wait for more
- there’s a novella out with short stories about some of the sub-characters, giving them even more depth
- the ladies are diverse and well-written, all given individual agency (3 of them are literal queens of their own right, and each of them is well-respected for their varying types of strength and individuality)
it’s honestly the series everyone is looking for, but no one knows about
yeah i’m a fan! ummm similar books, let’s see
- unteachable by leah raeder is amazing
- the mason list by s.d hendrickson
- off the record by k.a linde
- the royal saga by lee geneva (rose and connor vibes)
- adrian lessons and james games by l.a. rose
- the connections series by kim karr reminded me a lot of lo/lily
- tangled by emma chase
- exposure by iris blaire and back-up by a.m. madden
- and lovely vicious by sara wolf is an awesome read as well
I think I write so much so one day I won’t have to talk anymore.

Disclaimer: I can’t and won’t attest for the quality or credibility of these books. This list includes classics, guides, and a number of retellings and adaptations, so please don’t come at me with torches and pitchforks if x or y doesn’t tell the myth as you heard it originally or whatever. Theology books are also included. Keep in mind I took most of these recommendations from this Goodreads list, so feel free to check out synopsis and reviews. Please message me off anon if you would like me to find a download, but I make no guarantees. (I will keep adding direct Goodreads links and purchase ones at a later date.) You can find downloads for some of the classics here.
BOOKS
I have always loved mythological creatures, but I think too many YA paranormal books focus on four creatures: vampires, werewolves, angels and fairies. So with the help of my followers (really they did all the work, I just wrote down the books into categories), I have compilied a list of books with underrated mythological creatures. Just to clarify, I haven’t read most of these books.
