Hey I was wondering if you knew any books that are similar to the secret history?I really love that book but I also wanna read something new instead of just rereading it all the time. And I'm so sorry if you've already answered this some other time:)

anatomae-archive-deactivated201:

hello!! don’t be sorry, i’ve never got an ask like this before, and probably for good reason - i honestly don’t know. however the lovely ash asteriads and maddie mythaelogy have come to my rescue:

  • the goldfinch by donna tart
  • black chalk by christopher j yates
  • dangerous girls by abigail haas

i’m going to go ahead and rec

  • dare me by megan abbott, which is… not very similar, but has that ‘vibe’ i got while reading tsh, that sort of vaguely repulsed and dark vibe and i couldn’t stop reading it, finished it as soon as i could.
  • the novel that ash asteriads is going to write about fairytales (tbc, watch this space, etc)

to conclude, courtesy of maddie mythaelogy:

“The thing about the secret history, Richard, is there are no books quite like it.” - Henry Winter in a patronising tone, probably"

EDIT BY DARSHANA MAYNADS:

makorralin:

pro-tip: read the girl of fire and thorns by rae carson

- the main protag is a brown, overweight WOC that is not defined by any of those things

- there’s religion, spirituality, adventure, fantasy, and appreciation for coconut scones

- the romance is prime, but not center-stage

- there is a central, realistic depiction of eventual friendship and respect between two characters of the opposite sex

- elisa’s character arc is an honest-to-god tour de force that will make you weep with appreciation (lots of finding your own self-worth, not giving so much credit to ~fate~ and ~destiny~)

- pre-modern fantasy that’s not based around Western history

- it’s a completed series, which means you don’t even have to wait for more

- there’s a novella out with short stories about some of the sub-characters, giving them even more depth

- the ladies are diverse and well-written, all given individual agency (3 of them are literal queens of their own right, and each of them is well-respected for their varying types of strength and individuality)

it’s honestly the series everyone is looking for, but no one knows about

go read it
