YA IS LIFE. Bless your soul, anon.
While I write this my cat is demanding attention and that means she sometimes ends up on the keyboard and she had better not post this before I finish. YA is one of those things that I have many, many favourites to share, so I’m going to give you 5 that I don’t see much of a fandom for around Tumblr (e.g. I love the Raven Boys but if you follow me you’ve probably had enough of them, same with Throne of Glass).
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein. Strong female protagonists, thoroughly researched historical setting (WWII), unpredictable story, emotionally gripping. Warning: YOU WILL CRY FOR DAYS.
All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. Two troubled teenagers form a friendship, beautifully written, also devastating. Warning: lots of accurate mental illness depiction and talk of suicide. The first chapter opens with one character intended to jump off a roof and the other planning how to.
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. Closed setting thriller, you will question everything. Contains a fairly dark twist at the end.
the Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters. Hypnotism! Strong female protagonist! Charming love interest! All during the suffragette movement… and there are photos from the era. I love this book so much I’m trying to force it only as many people as possible.
Every Breath by Ellie Marney. This is an Aussie and I know the first book has made it to the US, all three are out in Australia which is good news if you’re in Australia. Smoking hot teen slueths, lots of Sherlock meta without it being overbearing. Even if you’re over Holmesian stuff it is EXCELLENT.
